Synopsis & SHort character analysis (film) |
V for Vendetta is originally a graphic novel that takes place with a anarchist freedom fighter who fights against the fascist state of the UK in the 1990's. The novel, written and illustrated by both Alan Moore and David Lloyd was published through DC Comics in March 1982 – May 1989 and was completed with issues.
Since the publishing of the novel, Warner Brothers Pictures had created a film adaptation of the infamous graphic novel as it pre. The film includes all the main characters however, changes were made in overall plot and location due to the story being pushed farther in the future, to 2020. (I will be analysing the film adaptation for this project) The overall story surrounds a freedom fighter who resides in Britain,UK who is fighting to destroy the fascist state governed by secret police that are athoritized by a dictating chancellor. Fascism (run by the Norse-fire Party) had taken over the UK due to a sudden reformation after a civil war that had occurred previously. The story also includes another protagonist, Evey Hammond, who is drug into a web of ordeals concerning the fight against the state and soon after willingly helps V with his plan to destroy the head of state, and let the people take control of government. Together the two come together to start an elaborate government take-down in which encompasses not only a fascist government, but also a corrupt economic system, as well as police that is driven by the hatred towards the "undesirables". The undesirables are what the Norsefire party consider a threat and tumor of humanity and are the following: immigrants, muslims, homosexuals and anyone goes against the head of state. The story further depicts a dystopian society that eventually unravels why both V as well as his protoge, Evey are against the government; through their haunting pasts. V's hatred and what evokes his wanting for vendetta originated from when he was directly involved in the human testing for a virus (Saint Mary's virus) which is eventually comes to be known as the intentional plot to kill hundreds of thousands of the "unwanted" populous, many in which were a part of the "undesirables". Evey's hatred originates from the causation of her parent's deaths of when she was just a child. Both of her parents were advocates of freedom and fought for their freedom until they were eventually "silenced" by the state due to their efforts being leaked to the secret police. The story carries on with both V's and Evey's fight that triggers a revolution in which ignites the people to revolt and eventually throw out the fascist government.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_for_Vendetta_%28film%29, 2015) |
V is the protagonist as well as an anarchist freedom fighter who starts a revolution to out throw the fascist head of state (Norse-shire Party) that dictates the UK and was involved and authorised the cruel human testing of thousands of individuals in which V was also tested on in the past. V kills off many of the leading Norseshire party members one by one to stir-up fear into the core of head state. He does so theatrically by leaving a rose in which has deep meaning as it was his deceased cell-mate's favorite flower (while he was detained for human testing). The significance was from the fact that she also was killed by human testing (selected due to sexuality) and left a note telling her story that later affects V to start the revolution. V has incredible speed, strength and intelligence from his original talents being enhanced while he was being tested on, his super-natural enhancements will be major contributor in the fight for justice. In beginning of the story, V meets Evey Hammond in a alley way as he saves her, just seconds before she is about to be raped by secret police. From then on, V shows Evey the corrupt ways of the government and strings her into his revolutionary web. He eventually falls in love for her as he sees her innocence and beauty among all the corruption and foulness of the world.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_for_Vendetta_%28film%29)

Evey Hammond who was born from two advocates against the fascists government, and prior to the reign of the head state were executed for going against the ideology supported by the Norse Party when Evey was a young girl. The sudden attack on her parents struck trauma and emotionally crippled Evey to obeying the fascist laws of the new government. However, as she grows older she grows subtly more rebellious which leads her to eventually meet V while she was caught by secret police, leaving her house after legalised curfew. As she initially appears weak in the beginning, she becomes stronger and more rebellious to the laws formulated by the Norse Party and becomes committed to fight along-side V to lead the revolution against the head state. She later falls in love with V in the story as he helps release her from her fears and trauma. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_for_Vendetta_%28film%29, 2015)
